To the excitement of many, the 2021 Shanghai Michelin Guide was officially announced today on October 21. There were a total of 43 entrants which consists of 3 Michelin star Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, ten 2 Michelin star (2 newcomers), and thirty-two 1 Michelin star (4 newcomers) restaurants that complete the list.
It is worth noting that Da Vittorio was only awarded their first Michelin star last year and receiving 2 Michelin stars this year is truly an amazing achievement, with advanced bookings of at least two weeks required. Bao li Xuan, located in the Bulgari Hotel Shanghai, rose from one to two Michelin stars.
Veteran Italian restaurant Shanghai 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA has now won two Michelin stars for five consecutive years, with Taian Table having also won two stars.
Ever since Yu Zhi Lan Shanghai won their first Michelin star last year, chef Luo Qilong has continued to work hard to maintain the one-star award this year. The Changning branch of Amazing Chinese Cuisine remains with one Michelin star. Newcomers to the Michelin list include a host of new one Michelin star restaurants such as: No. 3 Huangpu Hui, Ren He Guan (Zhaojiabang Road), and Yi Dao (Beijing East Road).
The 2021 Michelin Service Award went to Ji Pinxuan’s Wang Zhenxiang; the Young Chef Award went to Meet The Bund’s chef Chen Zhiping.

Today, 61 Michelin plate awards were awarded, 21 Bib Gourmand establishments.
As the Michelin Guide continues its growth and development in the region, it is becoming more able to meet the needs of the market. In the past Michelin reviews for Chinese food was only awarded in Hong Kong and Macau however, with Shanghai’s Michelin continued contribution, it is proving a key asset in supporting Chinese restaurants and pushing them onto the culinary world stage.
Each year Shanghai’s Michelin Guide is going from strength to strength and it shows. With China’s booming food industry which is constantly growing and evolving, it is relatively easy to get attention and for others to take notice of their achievements and successes.This year has been an extremely challenging time for the fine-dining industry, not only in China but globally, with more testing times to come. The F&B industry in Chinas has undoubtedly been a life-saving straw for the century-old Michelin Guide, but also sets the benchmark of quality for both chefs and restaurants on a global scale.
